Motherhood

How do I know when or if I should get counselling?

There is no wrong answer to this. Motherhood is a really good time to get counselling both as a preventative measure OR as a response to struggling with anxiety, depression, birth trauma or something more specific.

Here are some potential issues that could be addressed:

-Perinatal/postpartum mood disorders (depression/anxiety during or after pregnancy)
-Adjusting to motherhood even if no mood disorders are present
-Processing through the birth (whether it was traumatic or not)
-Fertility issues
-Pregnancy and infant loss
-Breastfeeding/grieving breastfeeding
-Navigating 'hot button' topics in parenthood today such as feeding, sleeping, parenting styles
-Building your confidence as a mother, including welcoming the "good enough mother"
-Managing the impact on your relationship
-Understanding the impact of your own parents on your identity as a parent and your parenting style. This includes things like understanding your strengths, your 'blind spots', your areas of anxiety, attachment style as well as larger cultural traditions
-Sexuality
-Regret about becoming a mother
-Termination of pregnancy
-Navigating the decision not to have children

*Note: I'm using the word 'mother', because mothers tend to be the bulk of people impacted by these issues. However, my work and approach is also inclusive of fathers, two spirit folks, transgender people and other identities. I welcome everyone into my space. I always welcome your questions, conversation and perspective on this and the opportunity to learn more.
