Welcome! My name is Kerry and I am a therapist offering counselling services in the Ottawa area. I am also available as a consultant to provide short term counselling services to Northern communities or to organizations for special events. I hold a Master of Counselling & Spirituality from Saint Paul University in Ottawa and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
I've been in the counselling field for over 10 years now, initially doing crisis intervention work in a Vancouver area homeless shelter. I loved the work and it encouraged me to pursue a Master of Counselling. During my MA, I received thorough training in treating anxiety, depression, self esteem, and a variety of other issues that people commonly struggle with. I also did in depth work in addictions treatment (counselling individuals, and the family members impacted). In addition, I have specialized training and experience working with indigenous communities. I am currently pursuing further training in working with women through the perinatal and postpartum period, after my own personal experience showed me how impactful these time periods can be in women's lives. I approach people from an inclusive, feminist, sex positive perspective.
My therapeutic presence is genuine and informal. Sessions will often feel relaxed and open. I see counselling as a true collaborative effort. Your role is to bring in your concerns, experiences, opinions, wishes, strengths and even your limitations - and my role is to offer my training and an 'outsider's perspective' to help you shift your life to one of more balance, fulfillment and happiness. I use evidence based approaches from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapies but may implement a wider variety of techniques and interventions in our work together. These may include things like worksheets, journaling, book or podcast recommendations, art therapy exercises or more. We will decide together which supplementary approaches may be useful for you.
My areas of practice include, but are not limited, to:
*Anxiety
*Depression
*Parenting/pregnancy/postpartum/motherhood issues
*Stress Management
*Self esteem/Body image
*Relationship and family issues
*Issues impacting indigenous communities such as residential schools, cultural identity and reclamation, adoption and more
